Production Day 25 The End
20 hours of madness.
It’s amazing what the body will endure when motivated by a singular goal. I remember reading about one man’s quest to survive a harrowing decent off a mountain peak after having suffered a broken leg. His recount of those dark hours was all about setting little goals. “If I can make it to that next rock, then I’ll reassess my options from that point on.” Not that completing two days worth of shooting compressed into one day is anything like climbing off a mountain with a broken leg, but the psychology of “taking it one rock at a time” is the same. If I sat and thought about all that we had to do on our final day, it quickly became overwhelming, so I thought in terms of just getting through the next shot. After a few of those, you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. In this case, the shower gag.
I wish I could put into words just how proud I was of the cast and crew. They stuck it out though some of the most difficult shooting days I’ve ever been on, only to be greeted with the granddaddy bitch of all days at the very end. Yet, they remained focused, attitudes in check and delivered with flying colors.
Elisabeth completely blew away any concerns I may have had about putting her through the grinder on this film. 18 hours into the day, with her standing hip deep in our “mud shower” she was the consummate professional. Keep in mind, she was totally submerged in mud, twice in one day, on two different gags, since the other mud gag messed up yesterday. Her talent, spirit and determination, not to mention, her sense of humor, made this whole process a lot more doable. The same holds true for the rest of the cast. I’m a lucky bastard.
We had one take to get it right. There simply was no time left to do another. Weeks of preparation, construction and about 700 gallons of fake mud had to pay off at the 19th hour today. And they did. I can’t tell you how f*ing relieved I was to finally get that baby in the can, not to mention the entire movie.
We’re wrapped!
